Killihump Meets Sam From Dogfish Head!

Well holy craft beer!! We met Sam Calagione, (founder/head brewer) of Dogfish Head last night!!! What an honor to meet one of the forefathers of craft beer!? Plan B burger bar in Glastonbury CT held a meet a greet - and lucky enough for us, we saw their event post with just enough time to make the trip!

So I'm really glad Chris always has his finger on the pulse with things going on, or we would have missed this completely! He had come home from work and went upstairs to change, only to come running down the stairs seconds later "We're going to Plan B... Sam from Dogfish is gonna be there!"

Hold the phone... Sam from Dogfish Head is in CT!? Within minutes we were in the car on our way to Glastonbury.

Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale 7%
It's been a minute since we've been to Plan B... (the B stands for burgers, beer & bourbon in case you were wondering)... and literally the entire ride up, our mouths were watering thinking about sinking our teeth into one of their killer burgers. Seriously, the food here is so good, we highly recommend going to one of their numerous locations in the CT/MA region if you've never been.

Having looked at the tap list inside the event page on the way up, there was no doubt I was going to order a Punkin' ale as soon as I got there, and that's exactly what I did! It's always been one of my favorites and I haven't had one yet this year. Dogfish describes Punkin' as a full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. They also state that it's brewed with actual "pumpkin meat", brown sugar and spices. It's one of the best pumpkin beers out there - very flavorful and smooth... and in my mind the one brew that paved the way for all pumpkin beers!

A little history for ya: Did you know that Punkin' ale is one of the first beers that helped Dogfish Head make their name?! As the story goes... Punkin' Ale won first prize in a recipe contest in 1994 at an annual Delaware event called "Punkin' Chunkin - which the beer is named after. According to the Dogfish Head site, this was 6 months before they even opened for business! Pretty cool, eh?

Dogfish brews that were on tap:
- Dogfish 60 Minute IPA 6%
- Liquid Truth Serum IPA 7%
- Punkin' Ale 7%
- Fruit-Full Fort Belgian-style (18%)
- Seaquench sour ale 4.9% (was available in cans)

While I was enjoying my Punkin ale...Chris was really digging one of the newer Dogfish Head brews, Liquid Truth Serum IPA 7%. Its citrusy, hoppy, smooth and one heck of a solid IPA. From thier site: "Liquid Truth Serum IPA is brewed using a unique process that incorporates four different states of hops: whole leaf, liquefied, pelletized and powdered. The result is a blissfully inefficient IPA full of citrusy and tropical notes, that's truthfully hoppy without being deceptively bitter ... honest". Definitely put this one on your list if you haven't tried it!

It wasn't long after we inhaled our killer bacon cheese burger and threw down a few pints of Dogfish brews when Sam and crew arrived. Sam instantly spotted Chris wearing his favorite 15+ year old Dogfish Head T-shirt. The shirt features the Dogfish logo on the front and has "Sofa King Hoppy" on the back. Say that out loud if you don't get the play on words right away! Chris had picked up the shirt at a brew fest in New London CT somewhere in the early 2000's. He's actually still trying to figure out how old it actually is, ha! It's possible it could be more like 18 years old! He and Sam chatted a bit about the shirt - Sam mentioned that he himself didn't even own this one! He and the crew were pretty excited about it and snapped a pic which later landed on the Dogfish Head Twitter!

We also chatted with Sam about my (Meg) trip down to Dogfish Head Brewery, Brew Pub and Inn back in 2014 when the Inn first opened. It may be time to get back there again soon!! Anyone looking for a beercentric weekend getaway needs to head down to Delaware and stay at the Dogfish Inn!

Sam was also gracious enough to film a little clip with us! It's incredibly nerve wracking talking to one of your idols, let alone do a video with them! What a blast though!! Huge thanks to Sam and for being so awesome to your fans and to Plan B for hosting such a cool event!

Also, you can catch Sam tonight (Friday 10/12) at Beervana beer fest in Cranston, RI: Facebook Event Page
